Robber Baron Updates

My last two posts have been updated.  After questioning Leif Ove Andsnes, I relistened to some of the recital online and had further thoughts.

Part of my disenchantment was probably due to the rather stiff and expensive Carnegie Hall experience.  $67 for a distant seat among the bored elite, etc.

That disenchantment filtered into my riffs on money and music.  After dialogue with JM, I have made my celebration of John Halle's article more guarded. ("I can go along with stereotyping 'smooth talking' and 'white shoe lawyers' as problems in corporate America, but not Talmudic scholars.")

However, I remain intrigued by how many of our valued arts institutions are controlled by and even bear the names of controversial figures -- for example, Carnegie Hall!

Moving west, Sarah Deming took a field trip to meet some of America's original victims while reporting on women's boxing in Spokane.  Don't miss the video of Albert Thomas performing a Kalispel circle dance song.

The final post, "Parting Shots," discusses the last day of fighting and has links to her complete coverage.
